Terms

[DECIDE: who you are contracting as.] The same pessoa física / ME decision as the privacy policy, plus the governing law and the forum. Fill both in before publishing.

What OctaShelf is

OctaShelf organizes PDF documents on your device and hands them to other apps for annotation. It does not annotate documents itself. Optionally, it synchronizes your library between your own devices through our servers.

Your files are yours

You keep every right in the documents you put into OctaShelf. We claim no licence over them beyond what is technically necessary to store them and serve them back to your own devices at your request.

Your files stay standard PDFs in a folder on your device that any other app can open. If you stop using OctaShelf, nothing has to be exported or converted for your documents to remain usable.

What is free, and what is paid

Everything that runs on your device is free and stays free: importing, organizing, annotating through another app, version history, search and reading. The paid tier covers what costs us money to run — synchronizing your library between devices, and storing your files.

If a subscription lapses

Nothing is deleted. Your devices keep every document, every file and every tag; they simply stop uploading new changes. You can still read your library on our servers and download your files from it, so that a lapse never traps your documents somewhere you cannot reach them.

[DECIDE: how long a lapsed library is stored.] "Nothing is deleted" cannot be true forever at our expense, and today there is no automatic removal at all. Either state a window and build it, or say plainly that there is none.

Storage limits

A library has a limit on how much it can store. Reaching it stops new uploads; it never deletes anything you have already stored, and freeing space restores uploading.

[DECIDE: the number, and whether it is per tier.] The deployed default is published at /health as quotaBytes; whatever is advertised here has to match it.

Payment and cancellation

Subscriptions bought inside the Android app are processed and billed by Google Play, and managed and cancelled through your Google account. Refunds for those purchases follow Google Play's policy.

If you are a consumer in Brazil, the Código de Defesa do Consumidor gives you seven days to withdraw from a distance purchase (art. 49). Where the store processed the payment, the store's own refund process is how that is exercised.

[DECIDE: the price, the billing period, and the web rail.] Not settled yet — no payment rail is live. Fill this in with 3.7b, and name the merchant of record once the web rail exists, since the merchant of record becomes the legal seller for those purchases.

What we ask of you

No warranty, and the limits of our liability

OctaShelf is provided as it is. We work hard to keep your data safe, but we do not promise the service will be uninterrupted or free of faults.

Keep your own backups. OctaShelf's sync is a convenience for working across your devices, not a backup service, and you should not rely on it as the only copy of anything you care about.

[DECIDE: the liability wording.] A limitation clause is jurisdiction specific and the CDC constrains what can be excluded from a Brazilian consumer. This is the one section worth having someone qualified read.

Ending it

You can stop using OctaShelf at any time, and delete your library from our servers from any paired device. We may suspend an account that breaks these terms, and will tell you why where we can.

Changes

If these terms change materially, we will say so in the app rather than only here.
